Award-winning design – MAN V12X yacht engine wins Red Dot Award in the Product Design category

Every year, the Red Dot Award for Excellent Product Design honors the best products of the year. These are either aesthetically appealing, functional, intelligent, or innovative; what they have in common is that they are outstanding. Together with MAN Engines, we won the coveted award in 2023. Learn more about our success story.

Awarded – in good tradition

Ship engines work in the hidden hull of the ship but with maximum power and efficiency and usually around the clock. At first glance, these are purely technical units with no look-and-feel-good aspirations. Nevertheless, MAN Engines and HYVE set out to create an excellent functional industrial design for the new MAN V12X yacht ship engine. Back in 2015, we won the Red Dot Award together with MAN for the 175D engine family. Read more.

Design with 100% customer and user focus

When designing the concept, we prioritized the following three criteria this time as well:

  1. to fulfill the customer’s vision in time & quality
  2. to have the needs of customer and user groups in mind, and
  3. to pay attention to the aspects of sustainability and resource conservation.

All aspects are now reflected in the design of the engine cover of the MAN V12X. The X design refers to the progressive, future-oriented design of the MAN V12X.

Design with Strategy

Because products usually have to integrate into a larger context, for example into markets, product portfolios, or brand languages, conscious positioning is important. HYVE’s designers used a variety of tools to develop a joint design strategy for MAN. Once the strategic basis was in place, the MAN V12X was a coherent further development of the design language of MAN marine engines. Despite the independent appearance of the MAN V12X, the new V12 engine with 30 liters of displacement fits seamlessly into the design of the established MAN marine engines.

Design with Safety

Because machine rooms are traditionally cramped, as much power as possible must fit into the smallest possible space. But nevertheless, installation, as well as maintenance, should be possible as quickly and easily as possible. This requires very good accessibility to the relevant areas – and the interfaces of the engine, gearbox, generator, and media connections must be precisely defined. In addition, safety and protective functions must be ensured, e.g. protection against hot surfaces on the engine. Some cladding elements primarily fulfill important safety-related functions and give the engine a compact appearance thanks to the integrative design concept. The consistent avoidance of danger points and the integrated burst protection in the design concept of the genset allow each operator to work safely.

The emotionalization of capital goods is already relevant to success in many industries today. In the case of engines, however, this has so far been the exception rather than the rule. It is therefore all the more gratifying that the Red Dot Design Award has taken this special feature into account and honored a heavy industry product in the form of the MAN V12X. We are very excited!
